How to save a web page as Markdown
Updated:
Open the page, click the Save Any Page icon and choose “Reader view”, then “Download Markdown” for a .md file or “Copy Markdown” for the clipboard. You get the article only — no ads or menus — with headings, lists, tables, quotes, code blocks and image links as proper Markdown, plus the source URL at the top. Paste it straight into ChatGPT, Claude or NotebookLM, or drop the file into Obsidian or Notion.
Step by step
- Open the article
Any page whose text you want as Markdown — articles, documentation, recipes, policies.
- Click the Save Any Page icon
The side panel opens next to the page.
- Choose “Reader view”
The article is extracted without ads, menus and sidebars.
- Pick “Download Markdown” or “Copy Markdown”
A .md file lands on your computer, or the Markdown goes to your clipboard, ready to paste anywhere.
Real result

Why do it this way
- Real Markdown syntax — headings, lists, tables, blockquotes and fenced code blocks — so structure survives the trip into an AI chat or a note.
- The page title and source URL are included at the top, so the document stays citable.
- Nothing is uploaded; the conversion runs on your own computer and is free and unlimited.
- Works on the page you have open, including pages behind a login — no need to hand a URL to a third-party converter.
Other ways, and when to use them
| Select all, copy, paste into an AI chat | Zero setup, but brings menus, ads and sidebars along, and tables and headings lose their structure. |
|---|---|
| Online “URL to Markdown” tools | Paste a link, get a file. Convenient for public pages; they cannot see pages behind a login and you send the URL to a third party. |
| Browser reader mode + manual cleanup | Gets you clean text, but you still have to re-add the Markdown formatting yourself. |
Questions
Can I feed the Markdown to ChatGPT, Claude or NotebookLM?
Yes — that is the most common use. Copy Markdown and paste it into the chat, or upload the .md file to NotebookLM as a source.
Does it work with Obsidian and Notion?
Yes. Save the .md file into an Obsidian vault to make it a note, or import it into Notion. Headings, lists and tables stay structured.
Do images survive?
Images become Markdown image links () with their captions, so the file stays light.
Does it cost anything?
No. Markdown export and copy are part of the free features — no account and no credits needed.
